Diamonds

At Toronto, more than $5 million in diamonds stored in safes at a North York wholesaler were stolen by cat burglars police described as pros.

Employees at Gem Star Inc. found on Monday morning that the business had been broken into, the security system circumvented and the two large safes cut open. The safes contained cut and uncut loose diamonds.

Toronto Sgt. Lino Murarotto said forensic experts confirmed that there were several burglars who ransacked the business on the second floor of the building sometime during the weekend.

"We know that there had to be a few involved in this because of the weight of the safes and the amount of work and effort that went into this," he said.

"Obviously, they were well equipped, organized and they must have planned this well in advance and they knew what they were doing." .
